English Language Arts and English Language Development

It is our goal that all students become proficient, lifelong readers and writers. Our teachers fully implement a comprehensive language arts curriculum based on the Common Core State Standards.  Students read a variety of materials, including informational text, challenging novels, and high-interest current event reading materials to equip our students to build comprehension and critical thinking skills. Teachers help each student develop the full continuum of literacy skills including print awareness, letter knowledge, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) program is utilized as a research-based curriculum for foundational skills.  Writing and English language development (ELD) are also a focus of instruction each day.

Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies

Mathematics, science, and social studies are taught using materials aligned to standards.  Students receive meaningful, interesting, and challenging lessons in their classrooms. We utilize comprehensive math curricular programs (Bridges in Mathematics for K-5th Grade and Illustrative Mathematics for 6th Grade), that are designed to address common core state standards and place an emphasis on teaching students to explain and defend their mathematical reasoning. In the 2018-2019 school year, the Killybrooke teaching staff began a multi-year training program in the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach. Our goal is for all students to become fully proficient with eight research-based mathematical practices designed to prepare them for college and career. Math fact fluency and other basic math skills are an important part of our instructional program.  Our credentialed science teachers work with all students with state-of-the art equipment in our science lab. Sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in Outdoor Science School.

Physical Education, Music, and Art

Physical education, music, and art are valued at Killybrooke School. Students receive physical education instruction in all grades. Students in K-6th grade receive music classes from our music teacher. Third grade students learn to play the recorder and sixth grade students learn to play a variety of musical instruments. Students participate in winter and spring music programs yearly. The Meet the Masters art program is funded by the PTA and teaches all students about art techniques. Under the direction of an art teacher, students produce works of art using a variety of materials.

Technology

Technology is an important tool for student learning. Our students utilize 1:1 Chromebook computers to promote learning throughout the school day.  Our staff is committed to the meaningful use of technology to enhance student learning and to improve communication with colleagues, students, and parents.
