Principal's Message

Dear Killybrooke Elementary School Families,

Killybrooke, home of the Colts, is gearing up for an incredible 22-23 school year. With high academic standards, a focus on student engagement, a welcoming culture, and a top notch team dedicated to supporting our students, we will continue the pattern of excellence that Killybrooke is known for. As such, our school wide theme for the year is Education takes you Places. We will focus on encouraging students to SOAR to new heights by actively engaging in their education, while fostering the understanding in each of our students that they can also rise by lifting others. Our scholars are kind, capable, and huge contributors to the success of our Killybrooke community. We can all reach new heights by working as a team, celebrating the success of others, and being intentional to bring positivity to campus each day.

One way we empower our students is through a longstanding tradition at Killybrooke. Killybrooke adopted the “No Excuses University” model in 2007. This model promotes a culture of universal achievement and exceptional systems to support the achievement of every child. This is a schoolwide commitment that:

  • Every child will be proficient in reading, writing, and math;

  • Every child will be challenged with enriching learning opportunities;

  • Positive social-emotional development and building strong character is important;

  • Teachers use assessment to guide next steps in instruction; and

  • Teachers collaborate to plan and provide instruction to maximize student success.

We work diligently to incorporate the message that students at Killybrooke are college-bound. This means that students are prepared for the opportunity to attend college if that is the path they choose. Every classroom has adopted a university and proudly displays its flag to remind the children that their class is empowered to pursue a four-year university pathway or any of the numerous community college and technical pathways available. We are very proud of our 1:1 Chromebook program for all students to equip them with technology to research, collaborate, and create while building the technology skills necessary for their futures.

Killybrooke is an award winning school. In 2021 Killybrooke was named a CA PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Silver Medal School for the second time. This statewide recognition is the result of the hard work, collaboration, and commitment to providing clear, consistent behavioral support and intervention. We are proud to be a 2020 California Distinguished School.  The Campaign for Business and Education Excellence has recognized Killybrooke as a high-performing Honor Roll School nine times since 2008. Our schoolwide systems keep our efforts focused on meeting our achievement goals for all students. This mindset that our students can and will achieve permeates our programs, actions, and systems.

The social-emotional development of our students is equally as important to us. Our staff is talented, caring, and dedicated to ensuring that every child succeeds.  Killybrooke is a safe, caring, and positive environment for students.

At Killybrooke, we help all students develop and demonstrate positive character traits (Responsibility, Respect, Patience, Curiosity, Courage, Generosity, Confidence, Fairness, Determination/Grit, and Gratitude) as a way to positively influence their success in school and build habits that will influence their lifelong success as adults.

In addition to achieving academic success in core content areas in every classroom, we believe our students should have access to a wide variety of enrichment opportunities to enhance their learning and development.  Many of our enrichment activities are made possible through the generosity of our Killybrooke Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). In close partnership with our active Killybrooke PTA, we host many family involvement events designed to strengthen the connection between school and family through engaging parent-child activities.

Student safety and student learning are our top two priorities. We realize the importance of maintaining a clear line of communication between school and home and are committed to accomplishing this goal so we can ensure our top two priorities remain consistent. We value communication with you and have set up procedures to ensure that effective communication is ongoing between school and home. If you need to contact me, please email me or call the office at 714-424-7945 and speak with our  Administrative Assistant, who will be happy to arrange a time for us to speak on the phone.

It is going to be an amazing year of learning for every student at Killybrooke. With our dynamic team and our supportive parent community working together for our Colts, we are sure to make this year a positive experience for all. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you around our campus!

Sincerely,

Laura Sosa
